Painting in Acrylics / Drawing in Mixed Media
This course is designed for both beginners and experienced students. Students will begin their painting journey with a process that facilitates working in layers, where different skills can be gained with each layer – using a range of techniques. Students will learn how to create an underpainting using an image as a reference point to go beyond this image allowing for more possibilities to manifest in their work. Each student will find more solutions to their painting dilemmas. There will be different exercises that facilitate learning in mainly colour as well as tone, form, texture and composition. Students will learn more about paint consistencies using acrylic mediums and a range of tools. Students are taught how to capitalise on mistakes. Development of personal marks/style is a priority in this course. There will be an experimental part to the term where there is the option of drawing in various media/collage. Landscape, still life, portraiture and personal projects are subject matter.
“I endeavour to help students to relax into the painting process rather than focus on results. I aim to facilitate, in painting terms, an inner dialogue with the subconscious from where strong expressive work emerges.”

Many students/artists say they want to get more abstract but have the painting resemble the original image/photo to some degree. If this is what you want this practical, open workshop is designed for you. In the beginning we will be working semi-abstractly exaggerating colour and simplifying form to achieve painterly work. Skills gained will be brushwork, texture, colour, tonal gradations and varied paint consistencies, line quality and negative shape work. With glazing techniques we will be simplfying complex areas and pushing things back and forth in space. This workshop allows for the opportunity for artists/students to bring the painting process into the present where all painting magic happens. This is a many layered journey. All subjects are options. Beginners and the more advanced students/artists are welcome.
“I endeavour to help students/artists to relax into and celebrate the painting journey rather than focus on the result. I aim to facilitate in painting terms an inner dialogue with the subconscious from where strong work emerges.”
